We recommend that parents bring their children for a first dental visit upon the eruption of the first baby tooth, which usually occurs between the ages of 6 and 12 months old. Children this young can sit in their parents’ laps while we simply take a peek to see what teeth have erupted, and to determine if any there are any problems that may require treatment later. During the appointment, we’ll also consult with you personally to address any concerns you may have about your child’s dental health.
A child’s first visit allows us to introduce the child to the dental office setting in a comfortable and stress-free way. Our primary goal is to make dentistry and dental visits a familiar concept to young children so that they are comfortable with the atmosphere by the time they begin attending routine visits. Typically after the age of three, we can begin cleaning and polishing teeth, as well as performing minor restorations (such as fillings for cavities) when necessary. These procedures are significantly easier and more enjoyable for children who have already had good experiences at our office. If you have older children who already attend regular visits, then we advise bringing your young ones in, as well, to watch, ask questions, and see for themselves what to expect during their own appointments.
